Fred Hope

Composition and Painting

All levels

These are ongoing classes held every Monday, Tuesday and Saturday morning 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. in my Laguna Canyon Studios. They are limited to four students per class so that all levels of experience are able to be addressed. It is more like a mentoring program and many students continue their participation and artistic growth over weeks months and, in some cases years.

Drawing and composition in direct relation to painting are taught as well as many painting techniques. Students work from life, photography and on location. The classes are well-rounded and focus on general overall skill improvement, regardless of the subject matter or medium.

These are serious, focused classes, taught by a professional educator

Fred Hope has been a professional artist, designer and teacher since attending art school at the well-known Art Center College of Design (ACCD) in the early 1970's. Originally trained as an Illustrator and Entertainment Designer in drawing and painting, Fred has been working exclusively as a full-time fine art artist and instructor since 2002. He is comfortable teaching a variety of disciplines, genres and mediums including landscape, figurative and still life, from life, memory or imagination.

Fred's methods are based on his teaching experience over a 25 year period at Art Center College of Design in Pasadena and, more recently, at Laguna's College of Art and Design. He has taught many classes including: Figure Drawing and Painting, Head Drawing and Painting, Sketching for Illustration (In Acrylic and Oil), and Landscape. His focus is always on composition, regardless of the subject or medium.

Mediums with which he has taught include Pencil, Oil, Acrylic, Watercolor, Ink and Wash, Charcoal and Pastel. Also Three Dimensional mediums such as Oil and Polymer clays in 3 dimensions. He also teaches the Fundamentals of modern, non-toxic printmaking on an individual basis, using his 30" by 48" motorized Griffon Intaglio press.
