October's Special Guest Artist Demo
 
Join us for a Special Guest Artist Demonstration by award-winning figurative artist, Kelly Mogilka. Kelly lives in Laguna Beach and is a teacher at LCAD. She is nationally recognized for her evocative figurative oil paintings. In this demo, Kelly will provide insight on how to pose a live figure within the landscape to tell a visually compelling story.
 
THIS Saturday, October 18th from 9am to 11am
The Artist Studions

Please note: this demo with live model will take place in a gathering space behind the studio building.. There is parking on site, but be mindful of the other artists with studios in this space and do not park in front of their studio doors.

NEW! Two-Day Plein Air Pastel Workhop with Mary Aslin
 
Please join SOCALPAPA and instructor Mary Aslin at the beautiful San Joaquin Marsh and Wildlife Sanctuary for a 2-day plein air painting workshop using the medium of soft pastel. 

This workshop is suitable for all levels, beginners to advanced painters, with guidance individually tailored to your level at your easel.  The workshop is open to all active SOCALPAPA members, the cost is $250. Space is limited to 15 participants. Learn more and register now below.

Mammoth Lakes Paint Away 2025

SOCALPAPA artists had a special time at our first group paint away in Mammoth Lakes, California.
From snow to spectacular fall colors, we painted all the scenery!

Register Now for the Shipley Nature Center Paint Out & Sale
November 22, 2025
9am - 1:30pm
 
This is an exciting new opportunity for members!  Registration is open now and the fee is $15 per artist.
There is also a weekly paint out scheduled for next Tuesday, October 21st, to get familiar with the location.
 
About the November 22nd event:
  • Paint the beautiful nooks and crannies of the 18-acre Nature Center
  • Chance to engage with new potential collectors and sell your art

  • Bring (1) previously painted finished artwork with you to sell (subject must be of Shipley Nature Center)

  • Sell what you paint the same day on the trails, framing not required.

Shipley Nature Center Plein Air Paint Out & Sale - 11/22/2025 

Muth Bin Reminders
 
Since so many wonderful artists are now contributing to the bin at Muth, we want to remind you of a few guidelines.
 
1. All work displayed at Muth must be original plein air-style depicting outdoor locations in Orange County. 
Animals, plants or people must be shown in a landscape setting.
2. Flat panels only, no foam-core backing or gallery wrap.
3. Mat board backing is suggested to make your work look more professional. 
4. Obtain and attach a sales slip for each painting from the green SOCALPAPA notebook at the front desk, and fill out a form to list your work in the green book.
5. Paintings must be in a cellophane envelope.
6. Suggested minimum price: $50 for smaller paintings $75 for larger work.
7. Due to space considerations, we are no longer going to accept prints.

Artists Studios—3251 Laguna Canyon Blvd, Laguna Beach CA 92651. Unit F4. 
Parking available in front of the studio, try to avoid blocking doors in front of other studios, may have to park in the Laguna Canyon Wilderness $3 lot down across the street.  After the demo around 11am—you may want to paint at the Big Bend location by the lot.
Restrooms in the Artists Studios complex, also port a potty in the lot across the street.

Huntington Beach
 
17851 Goldenwest St., Huntington Beach.
Take the 405 Fwy and go South at Goldenwest towards the beach, a couple miles to a small parking lot on the right, just after Slater, across from the Huntington Beach Library. At the north end of the lot you’ll see a walking path going left 100 feet to the Shipley Nature Center entrance.
$5 suggested donation. Wear long pants, lots of nettles close to the trails. Get a map inside.
Views of the small ponds and trees.  Restrooms available.
 
This is a good time to scope out possible painting locations for the official SOCALPAPA & Shipley Event on November 22nd.
